QUEENSLAND INSTITUTE FOR AVIATION ENGINEERING

Our Training Facility

We could take more students – but we won’t.

At Queensland Institute for Aviation Engineering (QIAE)’s current campus, we have the capacity to enrol up to 150 students at any one time. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be vying for space and attention with 149 other students!

We have twice-yearly enrolments, as well as a ‘rolling’ intake of students undertaking specific courses or single units of study. So the number of students on campus at any one time is quite variable.

Because we want to keep staff-student ratios at a level where we know you’re learning properly, we like to keep a class size at 1 to 15 for theory classes, and 1 to 8 for practical classes.

Even though there are always many more people wanting to learn than there are places on offer, we don’t feel it is in any student’s interest to ‘flood the market’ with new graduates.

Our facilities –where the important learning begins

We have 2 main learning areas you’ll come to know well: the hangar and the classrooms. And because they’re right next to each other, there are no long walks to get between the two and no being late for class to worry about.

Our priorities have always been focussed on excellence in teaching and positive student outcomes.

The main building at the Caloundra Campus is the QIAE hanger. From our ‘back door’, you can even look out at the comings-and-goings of flights at Caloundra Airport, because it abuts our back fence.

The Hangar is a typical steel-trussed and metal construction, with the following facilities:

  • Full-size spray booths for painting and composite material training
  • Welding and sheet metal fabrication work areas
  • Workshops for hand-skills and general engineering training
  • Aircraft and component storage.

The hangar has an enclosed mezzanine floor. Below this, there are spaces for:

  • Component workshops and tool room
  • More classrooms
  • And student facilities, including lunchroom and toilets.

Classrooms for theory training are equipped with lighting, ventilation and heating/cooling. They have desks and comfortable chairs for the number of students in the class, as well as furniture for the teacher’s needs. Classroom layout is dependent upon the teacher’s requirements and whether students are having individual or group training exercises.

There is a large concrete apron between the hangar and the airport boundary. There are various aircraft and components, which we use for demonstration and teaching purposes, parked there. Our facilities also include supporting infrastructure such as car parking, walkways and open/recreational spaces.

The Campus facilities are well suited for training purposes, are comfortable, and provide a useful and flexible learning environment.
